Today is the last day of my placement at RLB.
I have learnt a lot more than I thought I would and have really enjoyed my time working within the marketing department. It has given me a clear insight into what I would love to be doing after I finish university and continue to do in my summer holidays to get as much experience as possible.
I am currently on a work placement at Rider Levett Bucknall in the London office within the Marketing Department. I will be posting about the work I do, and what I am learn throughout the month.
My Last Week
Due to being given a time table at the beginning of my work placement and not being able to follow it properly due to being given different, more important tasks to do, I completed them first. Therefore, this week I will be filling in the gaps from the work I have already started.
PowerPoint Presentation
I use PowerPoint frequently at university while doing group presentations and also for personal use. However, I use very simple text and layout due to this not being very important in the tasks I do.
Therefore, using this at work to create a presentation to show the global board was very new as I wasn't aware of the things the program could do.
Due to being a brand, their was a PPT template already set out I was able to use and change accordingly. This was meant to be a background piece therefore contain little information and more pictures/large figures. All I had to do was add in the information, however the layout of each slide had to be exactly the same, with text and numbers in the exact same place on each slide, which doesn't seem complicated but it is very time consuming, making a big difference when executed properly.
Event Planning
Due to the 10 year anniversary of RLB coming up very soon, with every UK office having a small party this takes a lot of planning and organising.
Cards have to be sent to every employee (457) this also included printing off labels of very employee, I did this using mail merge of word something I had never done before.
An event is being held in Manchester next week, this needed to have a statement cake, considering we are based in London, all we could go off was pictures and websites on the internet, making it hard to know the real quality. Searching over the internet the type we wanted was a number cake similar to the one Lola's Cupcakes provide however do not have a store in Manchester. Calling main companies and freelancers, in which many didn't make cakes to the scale we wanted, we finally found someone who could produce a 20" number 10 cake by next Wednesday.
Due to planning many parties in the past such as my 18th Birthday and enjoying doing so, I was surprised to find this fit into the criteria of marketing due to not really thinking about it before. Considering I'm not doing events management as a module in my degree, it will be more general knowledge I am using rather than facts and figures.
My Second Week
I have had an insight into how my degree and the things I learn actually come in use in the real business world. This week I was involved in a marketing campaign to see how many clicks/views a newly released online advert would get. Learning how to target different audiences by timing and key words. This was very interesting as I learnt this in my last semester at university however, wasn't able to actually use the software, therefore seeing how it works in real life situations and knowing how to use it already, taught me a lot for the future.
The Postal Museum
Within my placement I was lucky enough to be able to visit The Postal Museum in London which is meant to be completed in July 2017. Due to it still being a building site, I had to wear boots, a high-vis vest and a helmet.
We were looking at this museum as a space to rent for an upcoming party which rlb are hosting in September/October. This was good experience as I was able to listen to all the relevant criteria needed when planning an event, something that really interests me.
It was very hard to tell if this space is going to be what we were looking for as it is yet to be completed however, the main feature being the unchanged rail line made the venue unique.
